HSM-70 'Spartans' complete flight deck certification By Lt. j.g. Kurt Laughary HSM-70 PAO T he "Spartans" of HSM-70 marked the completion of its first year of operations by supporting the newest Nimitz-class carrier, USS George H. W. Bush (CVN 77). The aircraft carrier recently left the shipyard and with the help of HSM-70 and the rest of Carrier Air Wing 8, successfully earned its initial flight deck certification. The recent detachment marks the first time HSM-70 Spartans operated from Bush, the carrier HSM-70 anticipates embarking on for its inaugural deployment. This is also the first time HSM-70 was fully integrated into Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8 - which employs a mix of sophisticated aircraft capable of air warfare, strike warfare, antisubmarine warfare and electronic warfare.
